Understanding Endometriosis

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

In order to conceive you need functioning ovaries that release an egg, a sperm that can swim to penetrate that egg and a capable uterus to carry a baby to term. When we take a detailed medical history from you, one of the first steps is to establish if you are ovulating on a regular basis. Anovulation (not ovulating) is a common problem and we can help this process occur through ovulation induction. There are many reasons why ovulation is not occurring naturally and this can be anything from stress, being over or under weight to more complex conditions such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders or ovarian failure caused by premature menopause or cancer treatments like chemotherapy

Physical Impact of PCOS

The team here at Panama Fertility understand that PCOS can affect your physical and mental well-being, it is very important that the condition is managed. It affects your physical appearance with acne, excessive hair growth and can lead to obesity.

Genetic Condition

Patients experience irregular periods and rarely ovulate with a mature egg. The ovaries themselves are usually enlarged and are covered are in small follicles. PCOS is the most common cause of infertility amongst women. PCOS can run in families, so you may find your mother or sister also have the condition.

Serious Health Problems

Diet is very important when you suffer with this condition as most patients are insulin resistant, especially if they are overweight. The concern here is that the condition can lead to type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and even strokes.

Treatment

Even though PCOS is one of the leading causes of infertility, it is also the most treatable. In consultation with your Fertility Specialist at Panama Fertility, we will find the right treatment plan for you to fall pregnant. It is important to note only 5% of PCOS patients actually need an IVF cycle. PCOS is managed with medication, this controls ovulation so that a pregnancy can be achieved.
