Causes of infertility

What are the causes of infertility?

Infertility is a complex problem that can have a variety of causes. Understanding the underlying causes of infertility is an important step in order to provide effective treatments and increase the chances of conception.

As women age, the quantity and quality of eggs they produce decreases, which increases the chances of infertility. Female fertility reaches its maximum potential in the twenties and begins to decline in the thirties, decreasing significantly after the age of 35.

Being overweight can affect ovulation and may increase the risk of diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. Women who are overweight or obese may have higher estrogen levels, which can interfere with the ovulation process and decrease egg quality.

Blocked fallopian tubes prevent the passage of the egg to the uterus and, therefore, fertilization. The causes of the obstruction can be diverse, from a previous infection to endometriosis, a previous abdominal surgery, and other reasons.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder in women of reproductive age. PCOS can affect ovulation and increase levels of male hormones, which can decrease egg quality and make conception difficult.

Sexually transmitted infections, such as chlamydia or gonorrhea, can cause pelvic inflammation and scarring, which can lead to infertility.

Endometriosis is a disorder in which tissue that normally lines the uterus grows outside the uterus, in the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or other nearby organs. It can cause abdominal pain, menstrual irregularities, and difficulty conceiving. Some women don’t experience any symptoms and only learn they have the condition when they try to get pregnant. For other women, they are very aware of heavy painful periods that seriously impact their everyday life.

The cause of Endometriosis is unknown. However, there are treatments to help manage the symptoms, and most importantly, to help you conceive.

Uterine fibroids are benign tumors that grow in the uterus. The fibroids could be asymptomatic or could cause pelvic pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, and fertility problems.

Hormonal imbalances can affect female fertility. Hypothyroidism, hyperprolactinemia, and other hormonal disorders can affect ovulation and decrease egg quality.

Our Fertility Treatments

Our fertility treatments can help many individuals and families with various types of potential problems, complications, and contexts. Explore all of Panama Fertility’s assisted fertility treatments.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

IVF is an advanced assisted reproduction technology that involves the combination of eggs and sperm in a laboratory environment and their subsequent transfer to the uterus. IVF can be a highly effective fertility treatment for couples who have difficulty conceiving naturally.

Ovulation Induction (OI)

This process is usually carried out by using medications that regulate the reproductive hormones in the body. OI can be helpful for women who have difficulty ovulating naturally and can increase their chances of conception.

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

IUI is a fertility treatment that consists of placing the sperm directly into the woman's uterus during ovulation. This procedure helps to increase the chances of fertilization and pregnancy by avoiding possible obstacles that may prevent the sperm from reaching the egg.

Artificial Insemination

It is a simple and painless assisted reproduction procedure that is effective for many couples. In consultation with our specialists we will evaluate if IUI is for you.

Ovulation Induction

Ovulation induction is an assisted reproduction treatment that stimulates the ovaries to initiate the cycle and mature a greater number of eggs during ovulation.

Preimplantation genetic testing

Detects genetic and chromosomal alterations in embryos to prevent serious hereditary diseases.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a fertility treatment involving fertilizing an egg with sperm outside the body. The process begins by stimulating the ovaries to produce multiple eggs, which are then retrieved and fertilized in a laboratory. The resulting embryos are monitored, and once they reach a certain stage of development, one or more are transferred to the uterus. IVF helps couples and individuals overcome various fertility challenges, such as blocked fallopian tubes, low sperm count, or advanced maternal age.
IVF with donor eggs is a variant of IVF that involves using donated eggs from a carefully selected egg donor and FDA compliant donor. This treatment option is suitable for individuals or couples who cannot produce viable eggs or have a higher risk of passing on genetic disorders. Donor eggs are fertilized with the partner’s or donor’s sperm, and the resulting embryos are transferred to the recipient’s uterus. IVF with donor eggs provides an opportunity for those who otherwise cannot conceive using their eggs.

Testimonials

Our journey had been long and unsuccessful trying to get pregnant. We decided to visit a fertility clinic near where we live and it was not the experience we were looking for. I mentioned the idea of medical tourism and we found Panama Fertility. Some of the reasons we decided to choose Panama Fertility is the cost difference. We made a virtual appointment with the clinic and felt very comfortable with the doctor. He explained to us how the whole process could work, we could live in South Florida and just travel for the treatments. However, we had been working from home for a while and decided to move to Panama. I loved the people, I loved the country. And it is a much nicer lifestyle at a fraction of the price. Everyone at the clinic has been very nice. And now we are looking forward to our new chapter in the story.

Marybeth y Steve Clients

After 11 years of marriage and three years without success, we knew something was wrong. Despite visiting specialists and undergoing tests, we never received a conclusive answer. Eventually, we gave up the idea of becoming parents. However, during the pandemic, we decided to explore our options and discovered Panama Fertility. From the first visit, we received a clear plan and felt supported by Dr. Mario Vega, who was always accessible. The process was smooth and, to our surprise, we conceived on the first try. The supportive environment of the clinic relieved all our stress. The level of professionalism and customer service is exceptional. We sincerely recommend Panama Fertility.
