Why should I freeze my eggs?

After the age of 35, one out of every six women who decide to have children will encounter some kind of difficulty in achieving it.

In addition, it is an excellent option if you do not yet want to become a mother, or if you suffer from any disease or are undergoing any treatment that could affect YOUR fertility.

Fertility Preservation

Why is Fertility Preservation recommended?

For Medical Reasons

Chemotherapy can affect the fertility of women receiving cancer treatment. This technology allows women to focus on their treatment and preserve their fertility to conceive after their recovery.

Other medical reasons include the risk of needing repeated ovarian surgery to treat diseases such as endometriosis or the risk of losing ovarian function due to autoimmune diseases that also require chemotherapy, or for bone marrow transplants.

For Personal Reasons

As women focus on their education and/or career, egg freezing offers them the assurance that their eggs will no longer age with them. Egg freezing is ideal for women under the age of 35 to make this procedure as effective as possible.

For women who have not yet met their partner or want to experience single motherhood, egg freezing allows them to stop their biological clock, as the egg maintains the same age as when it was frozen.

The earlier you decide to freeze your eggs, the better chance you have of getting pregnant when you are ready or want to start a family.

What is Fertility Preservation?

Fertility preservation consists of different assisted reproductive procedures that help to achieve a healthy pregnancy in the future. For women, we offer egg freezing, which is the process of extracting the patient’s eggs, freezing them by vitrification and preserving them at very low temperatures for an indefinite period of time.

The eggs will not age, remaining the same age they were when they were extracted and frozen.

It consists of the following procedures:

Ovarian Stimulation

The patient is started on medication to stimulate the ovaries and help the follicles mature for retrieval, and is monitored to ensure that the medication is having the desired effect, or may be adjusted if the patient is overstimulated or understimulated. Once the fertility specialist confirms that the appropriate number of follicles has been reached, an appointment for egg retrieval is scheduled.

Egg Retrieval Day

This procedure is usually scheduled approximately 12 days after starting the medication. Recovery time is short or minimal, as there are no cuts or stitches. Most patients are able to live a normal life the next day.

Egg Retrieval Process

The procedure to retrieve the eggs is relatively painless and is performed under light sedation, but you may experience some mild pain afterwards. Our fertility specialist removes the eggs using a thin catheter through the vaginal wall into the ovary with light suction.

Egg Vitrification

We follow a procedure called egg vitrification. Egg vitrification is a method of rapid freezing using liquid nitrogen in which the eggs are frozen at -196º to ensure that they are kept in the best conditions for future use.

Egg Preservation

Your eggs are stored in our state-of-the-art, environmentally controlled laboratory facility to ensure optimal preservation for use when the time is right.

Egg Thawing

The thawing of eggs that have been frozen by vitrification is instantaneous and therefore comparable to that of a fresh egg. When you are ready, you will need to book an In Vitro Fertilization procedure to have those eggs fertilized with your partner's or a donor's sperm.

Our journey had been long and unsuccessful trying to get pregnant. We decided to visit a fertility clinic near where we live and it was not the experience we were looking for. I mentioned the idea of medical tourism and we found Panama Fertility. Some of the reasons we decided to choose Panama Fertility is the cost difference. We made a virtual appointment with the clinic and felt very comfortable with the doctor. He explained to us how the whole process could work, we could live in South Florida and just travel for the treatments. However, we had been working from home for a while and decided to move to Panama. I loved the people, I loved the country. And it is a much nicer lifestyle at a fraction of the price. Everyone at the clinic has been very nice. And now we are looking forward to our new chapter in the story.

Frequently Asked Questions

At Panama Fertility, the egg-freezing process begins with ovarian stimulation, where fertility medications are administered to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs. The progress of ovarian stimulation is monitored through ultrasounds and hormone level measurements. Once the eggs reach the desired stage, they are retrieved through a minimally invasive procedure. The eggs are then carefully frozen using advanced cryopreservation techniques for future use.
Eggs can be frozen and stored at Panama Fertility for an extended period, typically up to 10 years or longer, following local regulations and the clinic’s policies. The state-of-the-art cryopreservation facility ensures the eggs are stored and maintained optimally to preserve their viability.
It’s important to consider your age, as egg quality and quantity decline as you age. The younger you are when you freeze your eggs, the higher your chances of future success. Other factors include your personal and medical history and your future family planning goals. Consulting with a fertility specialist at Panama Fertility can help you make an informed decision based on your circumstances.
Egg freezing is generally considered safe, but like any medical procedure, there are potential risks. These may include a small chance of complications during the egg retrieval procedure and possible damage to the eggs during the freezing and thawing.
