How Does IVF Work? Step-by-Step Guide to In Vitro Fertilization

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is one of the most effective fertility treatments available today. Whether you’ve been trying to conceive for a while, are exploring options as a same-sex couple, or wish to preserve your fertility for later, IVF offers a powerful path to parenthood.
At Panama Fertility, we guide patients from Florida and around the world through the IVF process with clarity, compassion, and world-class expertise — often at 30–50% lower cost than U.S. clinics.
What Is IVF?
IVF (in vitro fertilization) is a fertility treatment in which eggs are retrieved from the ovaries, fertilized with sperm in a lab, and then transferred back into the uterus as embryos. This process bypasses several natural barriers to conception and gives intended parents more control over timing and success.
How Does IVF Work? A Step-by-Step Overview
1. Initial Consultation and Testing
Your IVF journey begins with a thorough fertility evaluation:
- Hormone testing (AMH, FSH, estradiol)
- Semen analysis
- Ultrasound of the uterus and ovaries
- Review of medical history and prior treatments (if any)
At Panama Fertility, we offer virtual consultations for Florida patients and work with your schedule to minimize travel.
2. Ovarian Stimulation
You’ll take hormonal injections for 8–12 days to stimulate your ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs instead of just one. During this time, we’ll monitor your progress with blood tests and ultrasounds.
3. Egg Retrieval
Once your eggs are ready, we perform a minor procedure under sedation to retrieve them from your ovaries. It’s quick, painless, and doesn’t require an overnight stay.
4. Fertilization in the Lab
The retrieved eggs are combined with partner or donor sperm in our IVF lab. In some cases, we use ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) — where a single sperm is injected directly into each egg — to increase fertilization chances.
5. Embryo Culture and Monitoring
Fertilized eggs (now embryos) are carefully monitored for 5–6 days as they develop in our state-of-the-art embryology lab. Only the healthiest embryos are considered for transfer.
Optional: We can perform PGT-A testing (preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy) to identify the most viable embryos.
6. Embryo Transfer
A high-quality embryo is selected and transferred into your uterus using a thin catheter. The procedure is quick, painless, and doesn’t require anesthesia. Any remaining embryos can be frozen for future use.
7. Pregnancy Test
About 10–12 days after the transfer, we’ll perform a blood test to confirm whether implantation was successful.
If the test is positive — congratulations! We’ll support you through your early pregnancy. If not, we’ll meet to review your results and next steps.
